How to Turn Setbacks into Comebacks

  • Setbacks are stepping stones, not roadblocks, on the path to success

  • How you respond to failure shapes your leadership journey

  • Building resilience requires self-compassion and a strong support system

“Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

- Nelson Mandela

In biotech, failure isn't just an occasional visitor—it's practically a constant companion.

Clinical trials miss endpoints. Promising compounds don't deliver. Years of meticulous research lead to dead ends. And each setback carries real weight, not just for leaders and scientists, but for the patients waiting for breakthrough treatments.

Yet what fascinates me most about the industry isn't the frequency of these failures—it's how we metabolize them into fuel for innovation. Every "failed" experiment teaches us something vital. Every closed door points us toward an unexpected opening. Every setback contains the seeds of our next breakthrough.

Beyond biotech, this is a profound lesson in leadership. In a world where certainty is rare and challenges are constant, our ability to bounce back—to learn, pivot, and persist—becomes our most valuable asset.

I've seen this dynamic play out countless times throughout my career in biotech. The question isn't whether we'll face setbacks—it's how we'll respond when they inevitably arrive. Will we let them diminish us? Or will we use them as catalysts for growth?

The key is to face them with self-compassion while staying connected to your vision of what's possible.

Create a "Resilience Review" for yourself. Start by writing down your most recent professional disappointment. Then, ask yourself these three questions:

  1. What did this experience teach me about what I really want?

  2. What strengths did I discover in navigating this challenge?

  3. What would I do differently if I could approach it again?

Keep this reflection close. The next time you face a setback, you'll have a reminder that you've grown through challenges before—and you can do it again.

Remember: Every great comeback story starts with a setback. What matters isn't that you fell; it's how you rise.

Keep shining,

Sheila
